This early twentieth-century State Express 333 cigarette box takes a rectangular form with a hinged lid. Dating from the 1920s and produced in the neoclassical revival style, the box is constructed from embossed metal with a silver, grey, and off-white finish over an original wooden lining. The exterior displays considerable wear, tarnishing, and losses to the exterior finish, along with an ornate classical scene within an oval cartouche on the lid, raised cherub and putti medallions, decorative swags, geometric detailing, beaded borders, and stylised scrolling borders. Inside the lid survives the original red oval State Express Cigarettes 333 paper label with its historic trademark design. The box measures 5.6 cm high by 14.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a decorative desktop accessory or container on an office desk within a gentleman's library or study. It provides storage for small keepsakes while functioning as a collectible item of British tobacco advertising memorabilia and decorative metalware. Enthusiasts of tobacciana place it among other vintage smalls and desk accessories to display its historical branding and relief decoration.

During the early 20th century, tobacco manufacturers produced decorative metal boxes both as promotional packaging and functional table accessories. These containers often featured classical motifs such as cherubs, swags, or geometric patterns to complement residential interiors.

Most antique tobacco tins and boxes from this era were constructed from pressed tinplate, brass, or white metal alloys. Many received silver plating or tinning, which created a metallic lustre while protecting the underlying substrate from corrosion.

Authentic pieces from the 1920s feature period-appropriate die-pressing techniques, clear maker or brand stampings, and natural patination around the edges. Joints and hinges typically show period mechanical assembly rather than modern uniform welds.

An antique metal box can serve as a functional accent on an office desk, coffee table, or bookshelf to store small daily items. Its textured metallic surface adds visual interest and historical contrast when layered alongside books, ceramics, or framed artwork.

Clean the surface gently with a dry, soft lint-free cloth to remove dust without stripping the aged patina. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, or moisture, which can cause unwanted oxidisation or strip remaining silvering and paint finishes.
