Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This Georgian mahogany bedside cabinet displays a dark brown timber with a rich, polished finish, standing on four square chamfered legs. The upper section features a raised tray top gallery with pierced carrying handles, a pull-out bachelor's slide beneath, double panelled cupboard doors fitted with circular brass drop handles and a keyhole, and a single lower drawer. Practical proportions measure 76 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Suitable for placement as a bedside table in a traditional interior, the piece offers enclosed storage alongside a convenient surface for a lamp or books. General signs of age include light surface marks and minor knocks across the wood. The cabinet provides sturdy utility within a bedroom or dressing area, maintaining its period character and proportions.

FAQs

A Georgian tray top commode is an 18th-century item of bedside furniture designed with a raised gallery rim incorporating hand-holds. Originating in Great Britain during the reign of Kings George I through George IV, these pieces functioned as nightstands housing wash basins or night conveniences behind enclosed doors.

These commodes were predominantly constructed from solid cuban or honduran mahogany, featured oak secondary woods for internal framework, and utilised hand-cut dovetail joints. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass drop handles, backplates, and steel key locks.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular hand-cut dovetails on drawer construction, and natural shrinkage across wide mahogany panels. Original gallery handles exhibit hand-carved contours and smooth, authentic age-related wear around touchpoints.

A Georgian commode functions as a bedside table or a compact side cabinet in a hallway or living space. The tray top gallery provides an enclosed surface for table lamps, books, or ceramics while concealed cupboard storage helps maintain an uncluttered environment.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer movement.
