A George III gilt-wood pier mirror dates to the 18th century and is made of giltwood with a gold leaf finish over glass. The tall rectangular piece has an inverted breakfront pediment above a central drapery swag frieze, flanked by Corinthian half pilasters with classical rosettes, fluted columns, and a two-section mirror plate. Visible details include wear and foxing on the mercury silvered mirror plates, aged gold leaf surface textures, and carved detailing along the frieze. Measuring 165 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, the mirror functions well on a narrow wall space in an entrance hall or living room.

A George III pier mirror is a tall, rectangular mirror crafted during the reign of King George III in Britain, characterised by symmetrical neoclassical proportions, giltwood frames, and classical architectural elements such as pilasters, friezes, and festoons.

Georgian frames were typically carved from pine or lime wood, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf, often housing hand-blown mercury glass plates.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery on the back pine framing, natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass, and minor surface wear revealing the underlying red or yellow bole clay beneath the gold leaf.

Position the mirror on a narrow accent wall, between two windows, or above a hallway console table to enhance vertical proportions and reflect ambient room light.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve gesso, and clean the glass with a lightly damp cotton cloth without touching the gilded edges.
