This early 19th-century Regency mahogany chiffonier combines fine cabinet-making with refined decorative motifs typical of the period. The polished timber displays a warm brown tone with distinct figure throughout, contrasted by elaborate brass foliate inlay across the frieze and flanking the panelled cupboard doors. Turned pillars with brass capitals support the raised upper shelf, while the lower section opens to provide storage behind two doors. The cabinet stands on square tapered feet with a height of 116 cm, a width of 67.5 cm, and a depth of 32 cm. Position this versatile piece in an entrance hall, dining room, or sitting room to use the open upper tier for displaying decorative items while keeping tableware or household objects stored below. The solid structure remains stable and level, with the intact brass embellishments providing a bright accent against the dark wood surfaces.

Regency style furniture originated in Britain during the early nineteenth century under the influence of the Prince Regent. It is characterized by classical proportions, inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian designs, often featuring dark polished woods and brass accents.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid and veneered mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood. Decorative features frequently incorporated cut-brass inlays, brass gallery rails, turned columns, and gilded metal mountings.

Authentic Regency brass inlay is hand-cut and flush with the timber surface, often displaying subtle variation in hand tooling. Natural age-related oxidisation on the metal and minor shrinkage movement in the surrounding timber veneer are key indicators of period origin.

A Regency chiffonier functions well as a hallway focal point, drinks cabinet, or dining room storage piece. Combining the rich dark wood and brass details with clean modern plaster walls or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer movement or brass lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the original finish.
