Georgian, English, Rare Engraved and Gilded Double Series Opaque Twist Ratafia Glass

Description

This is a rare, Georgian, English, double series opaque twist stem true ratafia glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765. It has become common to describe some tall ale glasses as ratafias, but ratafia was a cordial or liqueur and was drunk in glasses of small capacity such as this one.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a thin funnel-shaped bowl measuring 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is gilded to the rim and is engraved with stars below, and is moulded with slightly wrythened fluting below that. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two white enamel tapes wound around a central lace twist. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 19.2 cm (7.7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker for the Peter Eales Collection to the underside of the foot.

A ratafia glass is a specialised British drinking vessel from the Georgian period, designed with a tall, slender flute bowl specifically for sipping sweet fruit-infused cordials or liqueurs known as ratafia.
