Georgian Double Series Opaque Twist Cordial Glass, Conical Foot

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian double series opaque twist stem cordial glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.

The glass has a rounded bucket-shaped bowl measuring 4.2 cm (1.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is finger-flute moulded to the lower half and sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of twenty white "cotton" enamel strands wound around a central twist of two enamel cords. The stem leads to a conical foot that measures 7.3 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.2 cm (6.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the bottom of the foot.

It is made from English lead metal and weighs 174 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Provenance: Sotheby's sale, 6 July 2005, lot 227

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A double series opaque twist glass is an 18th-century drinking vessel featuring a clear glass stem containing two distinct layers of internal white enamel spiral patterns, created through specialized glassblowing techniques.

These glasses were constructed using heavy lead crystal, also known as flint glass, combined with opaque white enamel canes embedded within the stem during the hand-blowing process.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit slight asymmetry from hand-shaping, evidence of a finished pontil mark on the base, minor striations or air bubbles in the glass, and wear on the underside of the conical foot.

Antique stemware can be styled inside glazed display cabinets, arranged on mirrored bar carts, or used as accent pieces alongside modern tableware in dining spaces.

Wash the glass by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding hot water and dishwashers to prevent thermal shock, scratching, or damage to the historic structure.
