Historical Context
Mixed twist wine glasses are mid-18th century pieces that combine air twist and opaque twist techniques in the one stem. They are valued for their decorative contrast, technical complexity, and reflect a period of innovation in glassmaking.
Collectors Notes
“Rare” is a term too easily used in today’s antiques market; however, when justified, it is entirely appropriate.
As an overall form, 18th century mixed twist glasses are 'rarer' than colour twists, accounting for approximately 1.5% of surviving wine glasses from the period.
In particular, this glass features a bucket bowl, a form long favoured by collectors for both its rarity and strong visual presence. Based on our own records of approximately 1,300 18th century wine glasses handled over a five-year period, only around 2% featured bucket bowls with flat bases and straight sides. Of these (26 examples), just three had flared bucket bowls, including the present glass, representing approximately 0.23%.
A very rare glass indeed, which is also perfectly balanced and beautifully executed.
