Description
A rare and very elegant example of an 18th-century Balustroid wine glass, dating to circa 1740. It features a drawn trumpet bowl, narrowing to a fine plain stem above a baluster half knop, with an inverted half-knop below. A basal knop supports a domed foot.
A finely proportioned example of this transitional and increasingly scarce form.
Historical Context
Balustroid wine glasses represent a more refined development of the earlier baluster forms, typically dating from around 1725 to 1750. While they retain the general outline of a baluster stem, they are noticeably slimmer, more elegant, and lighter in appearance.
As the 18th century progressed, there was a clear move away from the heavy, solid forms of early Georgian glass towards greater elegance and refinement. Advances in production allowed for finer, more delicate work, while evolving drinking habits favoured lighter glasses suited to more controlled and sociable consumption. This glass is a quintessenti
...al example of the period—its elegance not easily surpassed, and it can still be used today, just as it was some 250 years ago.
We are merely their custodians for a short time, and if it could tell a story, what a story that would be.
