Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A double series opaque twist glass is an 18th-century British vessel featuring two distinct layers of white enamel threads encapsulated within a clear lead glass stem. The technique gained popularity around 1755 following the imposition of the Glass Excise Act, as makers sought to add visual value to lighter glass weights.

Gaffers placed opaque white enamel rods into a cylindrical mould, filled the remaining space with molten clear lead glass, and heated the gather until fused. The glassmaker then drew and twisted the hot rod to create spiral patterns before sectioning it into individual stems.

Period lead glass exhibits distinct weight, a greyish cast under light, and resonance when tapped. Authentic pieces usually display a rough or smoothed pontil scar underneath the foot, minor air bubbles within the matrix, and wear patterns consistent with age on the basal rim.

Collectors and designers frequently display historic stemware grouped on sideboards, within glazed cabinets, or along open shelving where light highlights the internal stem patterns. They also function as decorative accents for formal table settings.

Hand wash antique lead glass individually in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid dishwasher use, thermal shock from sudden temperature changes, and abrasive scrubbers that cause surface scratching.
