A very rare set of original Regency double rope twist back Mahogany chairs .
Finding a matched set of six original chairs from this era is increasingly difficult, making this a significant offering for any serious collector or period interior.
Exemplifying the refined Regency aesthetic, these chairs are constructed from heavy weight dense Mahogany, possessing a rich warmth and retaining their traditional character. The surface exhibits a highly desirable, lustrous patina built up over two centuries, which we have carefully revived and enhanced with a fresh hand-waxing in our professional workshop, giving the timber a depth that modern finishing cannot replicate. The design is a sophisticated variation of the classic rope-back, featuring a curved top rail and lower rail with very skillfully made 3-point turning which is then hand-carved to create the twisted rope effect. This is paired with an ornately carved centre rail showcasing a beautifully executed motif, flowing down to typical Regency sabre reeded legs that provide a light and graceful profile.
Structurally, the chairs are in remarkable condition, this set has been thoroughly vetted by skilled craftsmen, ensuring every joint has been checked, secured, and tightened so that the chairs are completely strong, stable, and home ready. There are a few minor, historic repairs consistent with nearly 200 years of use, including occasional historic marks that are entirely normal for pieces of this vintage, alongside a notable, expertly executed repair featuring a handmade curved wrought iron bracket reinforcing the structure to a high standard.
The drop-in seat pads have been fully re-upholstered in a light sage green striped chenille material, a transitional style that is entirely in keeping with the original Regency stripe material these chairs often came in. The seats are fully traditionally padded yet very comfortable. As professional restorers, we understand that fabric is a personal choice; while presented in this beautiful new upholstery, should you wish to change the current look to suit your interior scheme, we are happy to provide a quote to re-upholster this set in a material of your choosing for added cost. It is exceptionally rare to find original Regency rope-back chairs, let alone a matched set of six, making this a truly investment-grade addition to the dining room.
