Antique Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Missionary Collection Box, c.1910

An unusual early 20th-century wooden missionary collecting box made for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG), the historic Anglican missionary society founded by Royal Charter in 1701.

The substantial rectangular hardwood case bears its original printed paper label to the front, prominently inscribed “Society for the Propagation of the Gospel” and incorporating the date A.D. 1701, referring to the Society’s foundation.

A narrow slot cut into the upper surface was designed for the insertion of coins. Internally, the box retains an angled sheet-metal chute or baffle which directs coins into the lower collection chamber and would also have helped prevent their removal through the slot.

Access to the accumulated donations is provided through a separate hinged wooden panel, allowing the box to be emptied without disturbing the upper coin-entry mechanism.

The printed front label is particularly attractive, with strong yellow, red and black colouring, decorative borders, ecclesiastical emblems and the central figure of a missionary holding a book.

Condition is good and honest for age, with surface marks, scratches and wear to the wooden case, staining and age-related discolouration to the original paper label, and expected oxidation and wear to the internal metal components. The coin slot and internal collection mechanism remain present.

A particularly interesting survivor of early 20th-century Anglican missionary fundraising and considerably more collectible than an anonymous period money box.
