A Set of Six George IV Solid Rosewood Dining Chairs in the Manner of Gillows, 1820'S

19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

A really smart set of chairs.

A closely related set of 12 dining chairs were sold by Christie's, Style and Spirit, 29th January 2013, as 'possibly by Gillows'.

In these chairs the beautifully carved but more generic reeded legs from the Christie's set are replaced by carved lappet capitals, another documented Gillows detail that perhaps strenghtens the Gillows attribution.

The seat rails are stamped JCJ, either the specific chair maker or owner.

87cm high x 47cm wide x 54cm deep

Seat height: 47.5cm

Structurally sound with a lovely rich colour. A few very minor and isolated surface blemishes, and a small section of moulding missing. One seat cover with a small tear.

Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George IV dining chairs, produced during the 1820s, are recognised for solid hardwoods like rosewood and mahogany, classical proportions, turned or reeded legs, and carved crest rails often influenced by cabinetmakers like Gillows.

Regency and George IV dining chairs were predominantly crafted from solid Brazilian rosewood or mahogany, featuring drop-in or stuffed seats upholstered in textured fabrics, horsehair, or silk over mortise and tenon timber frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs on the top rail and horizontal splat, distinct turned or reeded front legs, distinct dark timber grain with natural patination, and evidence of hand-planed joinery on the underside.

Pairing a set of dark timber dining chairs with a modern timber or marble dining table creates visual contrast, allowing the traditional silhouette and wood grain to serve as a focal point in the room.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent wood warping or finish degradation.
