Antique French Side Cabinet - Late 18th/early 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A charming late 18th/early 19th-century French provincial fruitwood side cabinet with a planked, moulded edge, tapering top above two panelled doors behind which is a large storage void with a central shelf. Finished on scroll-carved legs.

The overall condition is good, with the unit being structurally sound and quite heavy due to the timber used in its construction. We have noted historic worm damage across the front of the cabinet on both doors and on both the left and right pillars. This has been treated once again as a precautionary measure.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French provincial furniture was crafted outside major urban centres by regional cabinetmakers, adapting formal Parisian styles into practical pieces using local hardwoods. These designs feature restrained ornamentation, field panels, and subtle scrollwork suitable for country homes.

Regional artisans predominantly used native solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, chestnut, and fruitwoods. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques including mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-planed panels, and hand-forged iron hardware.

Authentic pieces feature signs of period craftsmanship including hand-carved door panels, original iron escutcheons or barrel hinges, wooden peg joinery, and natural wear to the lower feet and timber surfaces.

Pair the natural timber tones with neutral wall palettes, textured linen upholstery, and simple ceramic accessories to allow the carved wood detail and aged patination to serve as a focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Maintain stable humidity levels and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
