Victorian Carved Walnut Nursing Chair with Tapestry Upholstery, Circa 1870

Description

A decorative Victorian carved walnut nursing chair, circa 1870, of particularly striking design.

The tall back is flanked by spiral-turned barley twist columns with turned finials and an elaborately carved and pierced scrolling crest and surround. The central upholstered back panel and generously padded seat are covered in a richly coloured floral tapestry-style fabric, finished with decorative braid.

The serpentine-fronted seat is raised on elegant cabriole front legs, with swept rear supports. The walnut has developed an attractive warm colour and patina, while the elaborate carving and barley twist uprights give the chair considerable presence.

A highly decorative example of Victorian seating, ideal as an occasional or bedroom chair.
