19th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Gge 111 Elm Ladderback Open Arm-Chair C1800, Country Chippendale Style with Tapestry Saddle Seat.

An elegant late 18th to early 19th century, country Chippendale, ladderback elm open arm-chair with a bold presence and dish or saddle seat.

Well constructed and structurally excellent George 111 chair, showing a handsome dry patina to the elm frame with graceful scroll end arms and distinctive pierced-horizontal, ladderback design which was characteristic of the country Chippendale mid to late 18th century.

A structurally excellent and robust chair, recently upholstered in a 100% tapestry style fabric with fringe, the tapestry style upholstered seat was probably fitted circa early to circa 2000 and presents perfectly.

The chair sits well, a broad and deep seat, the legs have probably been cut down a little, a perfect occasional chair, dressing table, desk chair etc..,

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Country Chippendale ladderback furniture combines Thomas Chippendales mid-eighteenth-century design proportions with rustic, country-made craftsmanship. It typically features horizontal waved back slats, sturdy stretchers, and swept or scrolled arms crafted by local joiners.

Regional workshops favoured native English hardwoods such as elm, ash, and oak due to their durability and availability, often pairing them with woven rush seats or drop-in upholstered pads.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery held with wooden pegs, slight irregularities in hand-carved slats, and deep patination around high-wear areas like armrests and stretchers.

An eighteenth-century ladderback chair functions well as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom corner, or study, pairing naturally with modern neutral textiles or layered within an English country aesthetic.

Clean timber surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice a year, while keeping upholstery out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources.
