Superb Quality Regency Cuban Mahogany Cheval Dressing Table Mirror in the Manner of P & Ma Nicholson

19th century
Description

A superb quality 19th century Regency (circa 1820) Cuban mahogany cheval dressing glass or dressing table mirror in the manner of P & MA Nicholson.

This table mirror consists of a carved and shaped mahogany top rail with scroll decoration with anthemion designs with turned and carved finials to each corner.

The two side supports consisting of finely carved and turned lotus leaf decoration leading down to a stylised shaped animal leg base terminating with a paw foot, the base supported by a turned and carved rail with reeded decoration.

The mirror frame consists of fine quality cross-grain Cuban mahogany with the original mirror plate, the mirror plate is in very good condition for the age with slight discolorations/foxing to the corners, this can be seen on some of our photos.

This table mirror is in the manner of the cabinet makers Peter Nicholson and his only child, Michael Angelo, an extremely similar example can be seen in the book 'The Practical Cabinet Maker' (1826) by P & MA Nicholson on Plate 46.

This mirror is an exceptionally rare model being a design book piece of furniture, Nicholson designs are comparable with pieces designed by other notable designers of the period such as Tatum, Hope and Smith.

Peter Nicholson was apprentice to a cabinet-maker, later becoming an architect and an expert mathematician. He wrote many books on carpentry, perspective and mathematics. His son, Michael Angelo trained as an architect and styled himself as a 'professor of architecture and perspective'. The pair were therefore well equipped to produce a design book for furniture makers.

This mirror is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency dressing mirrors typically feature classical proportions, fine hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, and decorative elements inspired by Greco-Roman architecture, including reeded pillars, scroll-carved crestings, and turned finials.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as Cuban mahogany alongside flame mahogany veneers, pine framing substrates, hand-silvered glass plates, and hand-carved decorative components.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, original brass pivot screws or wooden tension knobs, hand-carved detailing with subtle hand-tool variations, and natural wood oxidisation on secondary rear surfaces.

Placing a mahogany toilet mirror atop a minimalist sideboard, marble vanity, or chest of drawers introduces architectural depth and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth, applying microcrystalline wax annually, and applying glass cleaner to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
