Antique Mahogany Chippendale Style Open Armchair C.1890

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and elegant antique mahogany open armchair, dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1890 , and designed in the Georgian / Chippendale tradition.

The chair has a particularly attractive tall open back, centred by a finely shaped and pierced vase form splat with slender vertical detailing. The shaped crest rail and gently swept back uprights give the chair an elegant, well balanced silhouette.

Gracefully curved open arms flow down towards the seat, while the straight legs are joined by traditional stretchers for additional stability.

The rich, dark mahogany finish contrasts beautifully with the upholstered seat, which is covered in an attractive soft pink patterned fabric. The combination gives this traditional antique chair a distinctive appearance that works equally well in a period or more eclectic contemporary interior.

A versatile piece that could be used as an occasional armchair, desk chair, bedroom chair, hallway chair or decorative statement piece.

Seat Height: 41 cm

The timber has developed an attractive aged colour and patina, retaining the character expected from a genuine antique chair of this period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century from cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this design style is characterised by mid-Georgian aesthetics incorporating Gothic, Rococo, and Chinese influences, frequently featuring pierced splats and dark carved mahogany.

Traditional pieces utilised dense mahogany timber, carved back splats, upholstered seats, and hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery secured with timber pegs.

Late Victorian revival examples feature precise machine-assisted joinery, standardized frame dimensions, and denser mahogany varieties compared to original 18th-century production.

Position the piece as an accent chair beside minimalist contemporary furniture or against light neutral walls to emphasize the silhouetted carved back and timber grain.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
