Late 17th Century Leather and Brass Travelling Box

17th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

A very fine and interesting late 17th century English work box or travelling case

English Circa 1680

Of conventional form with slightly domed lid, this piece has acquired a magnificent patina and colour-the leather showing all the wear one would expect and gaining much more character as a result. The central plate escutcheon is large and impressive and is inspired by the strapwork designs utilised so effectively on silver of this period.

The unusual latches to the left and right of the front suggest that this piece was perhaps designed for travelling, providing additional security as the piece was bumped up and down in a carriage or on board a ship. They are also highly decorative. The other mounts are designed to protect the corners and reinforce areas where the leather might be subject to additional wear and tear.

The leather has aged in such a way that it is highly reminiscent of polished burr walnut-the most sought-after timber during this period and so likely not entirely coincidental. The original hinges are strong and without repair and the interior is partially lined but otherwise plain as would be expected. The lock on the piece is very well made and of stronger than usual construction, signifying that this box was clearly intended to be used to carry valuable items when necessary.

A charming and unusual example of its kind and a very rare survival from this early period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century leather travelling box is a portable storage chest constructed from a wooden frame wrapped in thick leather or hide, secured with iron or brass fittings and locks. Popular during the Carolean and William & Mary periods, these boxes protected documents, personal items, and valuables during travel.

These boxes were built around a solid timber shell covered with stretched leather or hide. Metal fabricators added hand-forged iron or cast brass mounts, corner brackets, latches, carrying handles, and ornate escutcheons to reinforce joints and protect against wear.

Authentic 17th-century examples feature period hardware such as hand-pierced brass escutcheons, hand-hammered rivets, and crude iron hinges. The leather typically exhibits natural surface craquelure, patination, and wear marks consistent with historical usage.

A small travelling box serves as an impactful accent when placed on a sideboard, console table, or deep bookshelf. The rich textural contrast of patinated leather and brass pairs effectively with modern minimalist, traditional, or industrial decorative schemes.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. Dust softly with a clean dry cloth, apply specialist leather wax sparingly when required, and avoid abrasive cleaners on patinated brass elements.
