An Original North Eastern Railway Ticket Dispensing Box on Stand (Late 19th Century)

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

Railway ticket dispensing boxes on their original stands are as scarce as a free seat on the 6.30 from Victoria; to find another, you may need a return ticket to the National Railway Museum in York. This lovely golden oak example retains its original internal sliding tray, lifting handles, drawer handle and both locks, one stamped N.E.R. As expected for an item used constantly in service, it shows marks and signs of wear. The dark mark on the lid looks worse than it is and has barely disturbed the original polish. Our restorer could likely remove it, but doing so would compromise the piece’s integrity, so it is best left alone. The box is fixed to the stand, but removing four screws allows it to separate easily for transport. A rare survivor from the age of steam, full of history, character and charm.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These specialised pieces of commercial furniture were designed for railway station offices during the late 19th century to store, organise, and collect passenger tickets systematically.

Railway furniture from this era was predominantly constructed from solid oak or mahogany for durability, featuring hand-dovetailed joints, heavy brass fittings, and fitted internal compartments.

Authentic pieces often display specific transport company stamps or brass plaques, heavy-duty utility construction, original brass hardware, and specialized internal compartmentalisation.

Position the piece in an entryway, hallway, or home office as a distinctive side table or functional storage stand, pairing the warm oak tones with minimalist or industrial accents.

Keep the woodwork clean by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish periodically, while avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
