This Arts and Crafts table cabinet originates from around 1900, designed in the manner of Arthur Simpson of Kendal. Fashioned from solid oak with a warm brown timber finish, the piece is supported on a stepped plinth base and measures 52 cm high, 75.5 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. The upper section has a raised gallery decorated with a continuous row of carved rosettes, while the sides display vertical Gothic tracery panels. The front contains an open storage compartment on the left and a cupboard door on the right. The cupboard door holds a small brass drop handle and carries a deep relief carving of fruiting grapevines intertwining with tracery. Inside the cupboard sits an open interior with a visible plywood back board showing grain patterns. This table cabinet functions well placed upon a sideboard, dresser, or side table in a dining room, hallway, or living area to hold small collections, books, or everyday items.

FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, emphasizing traditional craftsmanship, honest joinery, and natural decorative motifs.

Pieces from this period were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as English oak, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring hand-carved panels and solid brass ironmongery.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, stylized botanical or geometric relief carving, and rich hand-waxed patination that highlights the natural grain of the timber.

A table cabinet can be placed on a hallway sideboard, home office desk, or console table to house stationery, books, or small collectables while adding historic texture.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood and protect against humidity changes.
