Antique French 19th c. Serpentine Vernis Martin Display Cabinet

19th-century French serpentine display cabinet. The cabinet is crafted in a graceful serpentine form, with intricate gilt-bronze ormolu mounts accentuating the curved structure. A glazed serpentine form single door allows a clear view of the interior, while the lower section is adorned with three painted Vernis Martin panels, depicting pastoral scenes with delicate details and gilded borders.

Measures 90 x 45 x 173 (height) cm

Good condition. Attractive colour and patina. The interior is lined with original velvet, which has naturally aged over time but still offers an elegant display backdrop. Vernis Martin panels with intricate painted designs, showing light restoration to the painted surface. The cabinet is supported by carved legs, with the rear legs slightly shorter than the front, requiring it to be positioned against a wall to stand perfectly upright.

Vernis Martin refers to a shellac-based lacquer technique developed in eighteenth-century France by the Martin brothers. Designed to imitate East Asian lacquerware, it became widely used on French furniture, particularly on curved lower panels depicting pastoral or romantic scenes.
