This pair of 19th-century porcelain Chinese famille verte vases originates from the Qing Dynasty period in 1880. Each baluster-shaped vessel is made from multicoloured and gilded porcelain, decorated with hand-painted samurai warrior scenes in red, blue, white, orange, and gold. The design includes gilded scroll handles on the upper neck, geometric red and gold Greek key borders around the flared rim and circular base, and gold detailing throughout. Each vase measures 38 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 16 cm deep. In a modern interior, this pair works well placed on a sideboard top to bring an English Country House aesthetic to a dining room or living room. The polished white porcelain finish, bright polychrome enamel pigments, and raised circular bases catch the eye when arranged together as a matched pair on a flat surface.

Famille Verte porcelain is defined by its overglaze enamel palette, where translucent greens, iron red, yellow, and gilded accents predominate over a white porcelain body. During the 19th century, popular subjects included detailed historical figures, warriors, narrative scenes, and intricate geometric borders around the neck and foot rim.

These pieces are crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce hard-paste porcelain. The surface decoration incorporates coloured mineral enamels, iron-oxide glazes, and gold leaf gilding applied during subsequent lower-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally show signs of natural ageing, such as gentle wear to gilded handles and unglazed foot rims, along with faint imperfections in the glaze. Hand-painted enamels exhibit depth and subtle variation in brushwork, unlike modern transfer-printed reproductions.

Displaying a symmetrical pair on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantelpiece creates balance and depth. They contrast effectively against neutral walls or rich wall coverings, working effortlessly in modern classic, Chinoiserie, and eclectic settings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or immersion in water, as moisture and harsh detergents can degrade fragile overglaze enamels and original gilding over time.
