Pair of Mid 20th Century French Parisian Club Armchairs

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

A Pair of Fine Parisian Club Armchairs, Mid 20th Century In the Style of Jean Royère and Jean-Michel Frank.

French most definitely Parisian circa 1940

The chairs of deep and comfortable form with cloud-shaped rising seat backs and arm supports of rounded profile. The chairs are fully upholstered in bouclé, including the separate cushions, and stand on square plinth feet. Taking some of their design inspiration from the seat furniture of the Art Deco period, these chairs are of mid century date and undoubtedly of French origin.

These chairs are of a peculiarly French form known as the club chair. Chairs of this sort were designed by many of the great French designers of the Art Deco period and later and the present chairs incorporate stylistic elements which relate to designs from two the 20th century's greatest furniture designers, Jean Royère and Jean-Michel Frank. Royère's Ours Polaire or Polar Bear chair is a design classic of the late 1940s and there are certainly elements in common between that landmark design and the present pair of armchairs. Equally relevant however and Frank's designs. One of those, still in production via luxury brand Hermès today, is known as the "comfortable club" chair and, barring the straight back to the seat rail and the arm supports, our chairs are remarkably similar to this design. Although it is not possible to say with certainty who might have designed these fine chairs, they would certainly have been made in Paris by one of the major makers of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the early twentieth century, club armchairs were designed for high-end clubs and private residences, featuring plush upholstery, deep seats, and substantial silhouettes.

These chairs typically feature solid timber internal frames, steel springs or heavy webbing, dense padding, and high-quality fabric or leather upholstery.

Authentic pieces demonstrate heavy timber frame construction, hand-tied spring systems, low wooden feet, and distinct proportioning characteristic of mid-century French furniture design.

Positioned as a pair opposite a contemporary sofa or flanking a focal fireplace, neutral textured armchairs introduce architectural warmth and visual softness to modern living rooms.

Regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment removes surface dust, while immediate spot-cleaning with a dry cloth and specialised upholstery cleaner prevents stains from setting into the textured fibres.
