This Art Deco decorative box is a 1930 piece manufactured in the UK. The rectangular vessel employs a warm brown burr walnut veneer with natural figuring across the surfaces, complemented by metal hardware including a polished front latch and a pair of playful Scottie dog inlays on the lid. Visible details include a streamline silhouette and minor signs of aging on the wooden exterior. The dimensions measure 8 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Suitable for an office desk, this box serves as a functional storage receptacle. Beyond its original purpose for cigarettes, it functions effectively for holding jewellery and other small accessories in a modern home environment.

FAQs

Art Deco accessories from the 1930s often feature streamlined geometric forms, figured wood veneers, and popular culture or animal motifs such as Scottish Terriers, reflecting the eras focus on stylised design.

Pieces from this period commonly utilised native and exotic timber veneers like burr walnut, combined with metal mounts, brass latches, and inlaid brass or chrome details.

Authentic items display period-appropriate joinery, natural surface patination on metalwork, natural wear to the polish, and geometric or stylized animal brass inlays flush with the timber surface.

Small decorative boxes serve well as accent pieces on coffee tables, office desks, or bookshelves, functioning as storage for paperclips, jewellery, or small keepsakes.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax or beeswax polish periodically, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
