An Impressive Carved Oak Dressing Mirror

Description

An impressive, excellent quality, beautifully carved, large oak dressing mirror. This circa 1890 mirror has a rectangular mirror, with light foxing, which is set in carved frame and supported by two hand carved figures. The carved base has a hinged lift up lid to conceal a jewellery / trinket department.

Carved oak dressing mirrors, historically termed toilet mirrors, became popular during the nineteenth century as bedroom suites expanded. Inspired by Renaissance Revival and Gothic Revival design, makers used deep relief carvings of figures, scrollwork, and foliage to demonstrate craftsmanship and historicism.

These mirrors were primarily constructed from solid oak using hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints. The decorative elements feature hand-carved details, while the glass plates were often mercury-silvered and secured into the timber moulding from the rear.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including oxidation in deep carvings, subtle irregularities from hand tools, and uneven wear to the underside of the base. Look for secondary timber backing panels with historic fixings and potential silvering degradation on the mirror plate.

Position the mirror on a contemporary dressing table, console table, or sideboard to serve as a focal point. Combining dark timber carving with clean-lined modern backdrop surfaces creates visual contrast while highlighting the relief detail.
