Early 18th Century George I Walnut Side Chair with Needlepoint Seat, C.1710–1730

18th century
Description

Early 18th Century George I Walnut Side Chair with Needlepoint Seat, c.1710–1730

A charming early 18th century George I walnut side chair, dating to around c.1710–1730. The chair has a well-shaped rounded top rail above a pierced and shaped vase splat, with cabriole front legs, pad feet and a traditional stretcher arrangement below. The original frame has a lovely mellow colour and pleasing early surface, with the kind of patina and wear one would hope to see on a chair of this age.

The drop-in seat is upholstered in attractive later needlepoint, probably early 20th century, which is very much in keeping with the period and gives the chair a pleasing decorative presence. The rear and underside show appealing age, with oxidised timber, original construction and an honest historic surface throughout. A very decorative and usable single chair, ideal as an occasional chair, bedroom chair, hall chair or desk-side accent.

Dimensions:

Height: 100.75 cm / 39 3/4 inches

Width: 54.5 cm / 21 1/2 inches

Depth: 52 cm / 20 1/2 inches

Seat height: 48 cm / 18 7/8 inches

Condition:

Very good condition for age. The chair is structurally sound, with no loose joints, no obvious damage and no obvious repairs. The frame is original, retaining a good early surface, mellow colour and attractive patina throughout. The drop-in seat has later needlepoint upholstery, probably early 20th century, which is in good condition and suits the chair well. There are expected old marks, knocks, wear and minor surface blemishes consistent with age and use, all adding to the character of the piece.
