Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian mahogany sewing box is a 19th-century wooden storage chest designed specifically for housing needlework tools, threads, and accessories. Popular throughout the Victorian era, these boxes served both functional household purposes and as decorative items showcasing fine cabinetmaking.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from hardwoods or fine veneers such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. They frequently feature mother-of-pearl or brass escutcheons, fabric-lined interiors, and brass hinges with mortise lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural wood patination, hand-cut dovetail joining on interior trays or frames, and period-correct lock mechanisms with appropriate wear. Natural minor wood shrinkage around veneer seams and mother-of-pearl inlays is also common.

Position the box on a sideboard, console table, or open bookshelf as a classic decorative accent. It provides discrete storage for stationery or personal trinkets while adding warm timber tones and visual history to modern schemes.

Dust the mahogany surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain periodically. Keep the box away from direct heat sources and severe humidity fluctuations to prevent the wood from warping or cracking.
