Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffre fort is a traditional French strongbox or portable safe designed during the 17th and 18th centuries to store valuables, coins, and important documents. Constructed from dense timber and reinforced with brass or iron strapwork, these boxes provided security alongside ornate decorative value.

These strongboxes were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or kingwood, often featuring parquetry or marquetry veneers. Exterior surfaces received heavy brass or iron mounts, decorative corner plates, strapwork reinforcement, and intricate internal locking mechanisms.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-chased brass mounts with historic motifs such as the fleur-de-lis, and authentic wear within the lock structure. Additional markers include natural oxidisation on metal surfaces and hand-planed timber on the underside.

A coffre fort functions well as a decorative focal point on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or library desk. Pairing the object with contemporary art or minimalist decor creates a balance between historical metalwork and modern design.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and radiator heat to prevent the kingwood veneers from drying or lifting. Dust the metalwork gently using a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish to the wooden sections once per year.
