1910s Mahogany Multi-drawer Filing Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A characterful early 20th century multi-drawer filing cabinet, constructed in richly toned mahogany and with later ebonised oak carcass.

The cabinet features an arrangement of small drawers, each fitted with original brass cup handles and label holders, giving it a strong Functional aesthetic typical of traditional shop fittings and workshop storage. The warm mahogany fronts contrast nicely against the darker painted carcass, creating a balanced and visually striking piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, modern commercial record-keeping expanded rapidly, prompting the development of specialized multi-drawer filing units. These cabinets were designed to organize paperwork, index cards, and small records systematically within commercial offices, banks, and institutions.

Cabinets from this era were predominantly constructed using secondary hardwoods like pine for the inner carcass, clad in high-grade mahogany or oak veneers. Drawers were typically fitted with cast brass cup handles and integrated brass index label holders.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original pressed or cast brass hardware with label slots, and subtle natural wear around the drawer runners and handles consistent with long-term commercial use.

These cabinets serve as practical storage solutions in modern home offices, living rooms, or hallways. The warm timber tones and structured drawer layout contrast effectively against modern muted walls and contemporary artwork.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber finish. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish bleaching.
