Scottish Mahogany Grandfather / Longcase Clock

19th century
Description

Exceptional early 19th‑century Scottish longcase clock in richly figured mahogany, signed Jn Adamson, Anstruther, a recorded East Neuk maker listed in Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Scotland. The clock presents beautifully, with a well‑proportioned mahogany case displaying deep graining and a warm, rich colouring. The hood is crowned with carved cresting and turned finials, framing an elegant silvered dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, and a date aperture. The hands are finely pierced and typical of the period. Importantly, it is fitted with a dead‑beat escapement , this type of escapement is most often associated with higher‑quality longcase clocks and favoured by better 19th‑century clockmakers. The movement has been fully overhauled and serviced, and the clock is in excellent working order. A very attractive and well‑made East Neuk example, combining fine casework, a clean and readable dial, and a technically superior movement.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Scottish longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, floor-standing, weight-driven clock housed in a crafted timber casing designed to enclose the pendulum and weights.

These timepieces traditionally feature solid and veneered hardwoods such as flame mahogany or oak, housing brass horological movements, cast iron weights, and hand-painted metal or enamel dials.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, original weight-pulley mechanics, maker names or locations painted on the dial face, and natural age-related patina across the timber and metal components.

Positioning a longcase clock in an entrance hall, stair landing, or formal dining space establishes a strong architectural focal point alongside neutral wall finishes and minimalist contemporary furniture.

Position the timber case away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist.
