Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Scottish longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing horological piece containing a pendulum-driven weight mechanism housed inside a timber case. Prominent clockmakers throughout Scottish towns in the 18th and 19th centuries produced these timepieces, frequently featuring hand-painted iron dials with regional floral and figurative motifs.

Longcase clocks of this era were primarily constructed using native timber cores veneered with flame mahogany or oak, often decorated with boxwood stringing. The clockwork mechanisms comprise cast brass plates, steel arbors, and hand-painted iron dial faces accompanied by cut steel hands.

Authentic longcase clocks display period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the case carcass, original cast iron weights, and hand-painted maker signatures on the dial. Natural oxidisation on the brass movement and subtle timber movement consistent with age further confirm origin.

Positioned in an entrance hall, staircase landing, or formal reception room, a longcase clock creates strong vertical proportions. Contrast the dark timber cabinet with light, neutral wall colours and contemporary artwork to integrate traditional craftsmanship into modern spaces.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid veneer shrinkage, dusting regularly and waxing annually with natural beeswax. The mechanical movement requires periodic oiling and balancing by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
