This early 19th-century bookcase and display cabinet belongs to the Gothic Revival style. Made from dark brown mahogany with glass and brass hardware, the piece has a moulded cornice, Gothic arched astragal glazing bars across the front, and bracket feet. A single glazed door encloses four internal shelves, and the cabinet is glazed on both sides as well as the front. The structure is heavy and sturdy with a brass key tassel hanging on the left side and visible grain variations in the timber. Measuring 163 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, this tall display cabinet suits a living room, study, or hallway for housing books, collections, or decorative objects.

Early 19th-century Gothic Revival bookcases feature architectural details inspired by medieval design, such as pointed tracery arches, astragal glazed doors, and solid hardwood frames, typically crafted during the Georgian and Regency eras.

Cabinets from this era were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or oak frames, hand-cut glass panes set within wooden astragal glazing bars, and polished brass door fittings.

Authentic pieces usually show signs of hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetail joints, original cylinder or crown glass with subtle waviness or bubbles, and period-correct keyhole escutcheons.

Position the cabinet as a focal piece against light neutral walls, styling the interior shelves with a curated mix of books, ceramic vessels, and framed artwork to soften the dark wood tones.

Clean the woodwork regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, while cleaning the glass with a mild alcohol-free solution to protect the surrounding timber frame.
