This William and Mary period table clock by Jonathon Lowndes dates from around 1695. The case is constructed from ebony wood with a black finish, complemented by polished gold-coloured brass hardware and mounts. It features an ornate basket top cresting with repoussé work over a red fabric backing, an intricately detailed carrying handle with dragon or serpent ends, and gilded brass eagle talon bun feet. The dial includes a silvered chapter ring, raised mouldings around the glazed panels, and pierced gilt mounts positioned on the front corners and framing the face. The dimensions are 38.1 cm high, 24.8 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this timepiece functions as a decorative item on a mantelpiece or desk, suited to a gentleman's library or a study. The clock stands upright on a flat surface, displaying its architectural timber case and metalwork. The combination of dark ebonised woodwork and bright metallic details integrates into period or traditional display settings.

A basket top table clock is a late 17th-century English portable timepiece featuring a pierced, decorative gilt-brass cresting shaped like a basket. Popularised during the reign of William and Mary, these spring-driven clocks served as functional and decorative horological instruments in historic residences.

These clocks were constructed using ebonised fruitwood or solid ebony cases, adorned with cast and repousse gilt-brass or bronze mounts. Dial plates featured silvered brass chapter rings, steel hands, and cast corner spandrels over a brass spring-driven movement.

Authentic late 17th-century clocks typically display square brass dial plates with narrow silvered chapter rings, latched pillars within the movement, and hand-chased gilt-brass basket crestings. Engravings of recognized clockmakers on the dial or backplate assist with period authentication.

Position the clock as a central focal piece on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or within a library display. Complement its dark ebonised casing and warm metallic mounts with neutral wall colours, brass lighting, or framed architectural prints.

Dust the case gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or chemical polishes that can degrade original ebonised finishes and gilt surfaces. Movement mechanisms require periodic servicing by a professional horologist to ensure correct functioning.
