Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Aesthetic Movement furniture emerged in the late 19th century, rejecting heavy Victorian ornamentation in favour of the art for arts sake philosophy. It is characterised by Anglo-Japanese influences, ebonised wood finishes, fine gilding, geometric forms, and stylized natural motifs such as sunflowers and peacocks.

These cabinets were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany or fruitwood, which were stained and polished with a black ebonised finish to imitate Japanese lacquer. Decorative elements often incorporated hand-painted panels, gold leaf gilding, bevelled mirror glass, and precision-turned spindle galleries.

Authentic pieces feature dark ebonised finishes paired with subtle gilt lines or hand-painted botanical panels. Look for characteristic turned spindles, asymmetric shelf arrangements, japonisme influences, and period cabinetmaker stamps or labels from makers such as Lamb of Manchester or Gillows.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to allow the dark silhouetted frame and gilt accents to stand out, or set it against rich wallpaper for a maximalist look. Pair it with contemporary ceramics, brass decorative objects, or minimalist glassware to balance historical detail with modern simplicity.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the delicate finish. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, or solvent-based polishes that can damage ebonised lacquers or lift fragile gold leaf gilding, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
