Description

A superb pair of French Grand Tour wall mirrors, dating to the mid-19th century and cast in finely detailed gilt bronze. These mirrors capture the romanticism and neoclassical revivalism so prized by 19th-century travellers of the Grand Tour era. Each is lavishly ornamented with architectural scrollwork, crowned acanthus crests, and highly expressive mythological mask mounts, echoing classical themes found in ancient Roman and Greek decorative arts.

Originally intended as luxurious souvenirs or statement pieces brought back from extended European travels, these mirrors exemplify the highly decorative and historically inspired designs that captivated the imaginations of Victorian elites abroad – circa 1870.

In good condition – Both mirrors are in very good antique condition. The gilt bronze surfaces show gentle, even wear with some darkening and minor rubbing consistent with age, especially at raised points - enhancing their antique character. Original bevelled glass plates are intact. Structurally sound and ready to hang.
