Windsor Low Back Chairs, Set Of 6, Yew & Elm, C1830

Matched set of 6 x low back Windsor armchairs in the style of John and Elizabeth Gabbitass of Worksop, Notts in yew and fruitwood with elm seats, c 1830, being examples of the most elegant and decorative form of Windsor armchair from the Nottinghamshire tradition, in good original condition, (see The English Regional Chair by Dr Bill Cotton, p168, Fig NE229). ‘Fancy’ fretted splats with some burr in the yew, crinoline stretchers, complex leg turning, flared turned arm supports and notches under the ends of the arms, all being features of makers’ ‘best’ chairs. One chair with probably the original retailers label underneath the seat. Two very similar chairs available to create a matched set of 8 (without notches under the ends of the arms) if required.
