FAQs

The Regency style spans the early 19th century, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture. It is characterised by symmetrical proportions, architectural motifs such as pilasters and columns, and a focus on grand scale.

These pieces typically feature a carved pine or softwood subframe coated in gessoa mixture of chalk and binder. Layers of gold leaf are applied over a red bole base, then burnished to achieve a metallic lustre.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as shrinkage cracks in the gesso, foxing and oxidisation within the mirror plate, and hand-cut joinery. The gold leaf often shows wear, revealing the red bole underneath.

Such a mirror serves as a monumental focal point. In a contemporary setting, leaning it against a tall wall contrasts historical ornamentation with minimalist architecture, amplifying natural light and spatial depth.

Giltwood is extremely delicate and water-soluble. Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding all chemical solvents, modern polishes, and abrasive cloths to prevent lifting the gold leaf.
