Georgian Oak Mule Chest

18th century
Description

A good example of a large oak mule chest with a drawer to the base, dating from the mid to late 18th Century. It has a traditional panelled front and panelled sides and top. It is a plain example which has avoided being overcarved and has a lovely warm patina. The lid opens to reveal a large storage area with a candle box and its original ring hinges. The initials E and R and carved on the front and it is likely that this was given as a marriage gift.

It is in good original condition throughout and is strong and sturdy. The back is clean and the hinges are strong. The drawer opens smoothly and the interior is generally clean and tidy with a few small old marks. The handles on the drawer have been changed at some point but suit the piece well. There have been a few old repairs and restorations and there are signs of age and use with some minor marks and knocks here and there but nothing detrimental and no major damages. There has been some historic worm in places which has all been treated as a precaution. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

This Georgian oak mule chest stands as a sturdy English country house storage piece finished in a dark brown tone with a warm patina. The construction incorporates pegged mortise and tenon joinery, panelled sides and top, and four fielded front panels positioned above a single lower drawer. Additional details include carved initials E and R flanking the central keyhole, visible wood grain texture on the drawer front, and two round brass drop handles fitted to the lower drawer. The dimensions measure 79 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. Practical for daily storage needs, this chest serves as an accent furniture piece in a bedroom, hallway, or living room.

A mule chest is an 18th-century storage vessel incorporating a top compartment accessed via a hinged lid, situated above one or more drawers at the base.

These chests were typically crafted from solid English oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery, raised fielded panels, hand-cut dovetails on the drawers, and cast brass fittings.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed timber surfaces, historic peg joinery, natural wear around the keyhole and base, and hand-forged or early cast iron and brass hardware.

A mule chest works exceptionally well placed at the foot of a bed for extra linen storage or positioned within a hallway as a functional bench and storage piece.

Clean the surface with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood surface and preserve the historic patina.
