This eighteenth-century Georgian mule chest is made from dark brown oak with brass hardware. The front is organised with three fielded upper panels above two short drawers, fitted with curved brass swing handles and keyhole escutcheons. The structure stands on shaped bracket feet beneath a moulded base and incorporates a keyhole set into the upper rail. The oak timber shows a figured grain and a deep patina. Measuring 89.5 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 57.5 cm deep, the unit provides storage for linen and blankets at the foot of a bed or in a hallway in a home today.

Originating in the late 17th and 18th centuries, the mule chest evolved from the traditional coffer by incorporating lower drawers beneath the main hinged storage compartment.

These chests were typically crafted from solid native hardwoods such as oak, featuring pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-carved fielded panels, and hand-forged brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian examples showcase hand-sawn timber marks, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, period-correct brass escutcheons, and natural wear around the base and hinges.

A mule chest functions effectively as an entryway console or at the foot of a bed, serving as a focal point while providing concealed storage.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood, keep the piece away from direct heat sources, and clean surfaces using a dry soft cloth.
