This large Jacobean period mule chest dates from 1700 and displays an English country house style. The piece comprises oak timber with a dark brown finish and brass hardware. Visible elements include a hinged top lid, four raised fielded panels across the front, an ornate brass escutcheon, twin base drawers fitted with brass drop handles, and shaped long bracket feet. A slight twist appears on the right hand front edge of the lid. Measurements are 145 cm wide by 58 cm deep by 109 cm high. Practical applications for the item include placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space to supply useful storage for blankets, linens, or bulky items while serving as a substantial decorative surface. The dark wood tone and traditional joinery suit period interiors, country houses, or heritage room settings.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity.

An oak mule chest functions well in modern schemes as an entryway storage unit, a living room accent piece, or positioned at the foot of a bed to add historic character and texture.

Authentic period pieces show signs of hand-planed timber, pegged joinery, heavy oak construction, age-related patination, and original keyholes or brass hardware suited to seventeenth-century design standards.

Chests from this era were typically constructed using joined oak frames with recessed or fielded panels, secured with wooden pegs (trunnels), and fitted with hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

A mule chest is a traditional form of storage furniture developed in seventeenth-century England, featuring a top compartment accessed via a hinged lid and one or more drawers built into the base.
