Oak Music Filing Cabinet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Oak Music Filing Cabinet could be used in so many ways in the home to provide useful storage. The lockable panelled door opens to reveal a fully fitted oak interior, with vertical divisions for files or magazines or such like, along with a smooth-running drawer complete with decorative handle.

Standing on its original castors for easy movement, this cabinet is finished all round so could be used centrally in a room if required. This piece would also make an impressive pedestal to display a sculptural form on.

Being substantially constructed and thus of a very good weight, this piece will remain stable too. The lovely warm hue of the well figured Oak, along with simplistic design means that this cabinet would work well in both a contemporary or more traditional home décor.

Supplied with working key.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique music filing cabinet is a specialised piece of furniture designed during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras specifically to store sheet music, manuscripts, and paper documents neatly. These cabinets often featured shallow drawers or fall-front shelves tailored to hold unfolded musical scores.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside solid panelled construction. Interiors frequently incorporated lightweight dividers, brass drop handles, and brass castors for mobility.

Authentic Edwardian pieces typically showcase quarter-sawn oak with visible ray fleck graining, original brass locks or stamped escutcheon plates, and hand-cut joinery. Look for natural age wear on internal runners, original ceramic or metal castors, and period-appropriate patination.

In contemporary settings, a tall narrow music cabinet functions well as a bedside storage unit, a hallway organiser for documents, or an end table in a study. Placing a brass desk lamp or framed print on top creates a balanced focal point.

To preserve solid oak, apply a high-grade beeswax polish two to three times a year along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood shrinkage, splitting, or finish degradation.
