Interesting georgian bone counter box, possibly prisoner of war work. The top is beautifully decorated engraving is stained with colour and the inscription reads “A Trifle from London”. There is a later label to the base of the box which reads Beetles from Ceylon, I have left this on as its part of the items history. The side of the box clearly shows that it is made from bone. A Georgian bone counter box is a small, portable container traditionally used during the 18th and early 19th centuries to hold gaming counters or tokens for card games.

These pieces were typically carved from animal bone or ivory using pole lathes, often featuring delicate polychrome hand-painted inscriptions or geometric motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural material grain, subtle yellowing consistent with age, hand-turned tool marks, and period-appropriate typography or decoration.

Such small collectibles add historic texture and curated interest when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or coffee table tray.

Preserve bone items by keeping them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, avoiding harsh cleaning agents entirely.
