We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century English gilt mirrors typically feature carved wooden frames coated in gesso and gold leaf, often incorporating classical motifs, ornate scrolling, and architectural proportions influenced by Regency and Victorian aesthetics.

These frames are constructed from carved timber, such as pine or softwood, layered with gesso (a plaster mixture) to create a smooth surface for applying thin gold leaf or metal leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces often show hand-carved details, traditional joinery on the reverse, patination or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and minor cracks in the gesso layer due to age.

Mounting a large antique mirror opposite a window maximises natural light and creates an illusion of space, serving as a focal point above a modern sideboard or resting on the floor against a neutral wall.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, water, or abrasive materials that can strip or damage the delicate gold leaf and fragile gesso finish.
