Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Italian provincial painted softwood display cabinet measures 179 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. The piece has a pink body with blue, cream, and red details, along with a glazed arched door on the upper section, turned wooden finials at the top corners, and dark wrought iron hinges on the lower cupboard door. Hand-painted floral motifs decorate the blue interior fabric background behind the glass shelves and adorn the cream central panel of the solid lower cabinet door. Such a cabinet suits practical placement in a bathroom or a living room for storing and displaying toiletries, books, or small ornaments. The soft painted finish shows gentle signs of historic wear and ageing across the surfaces, complementing the traditional construction and country style. The compact footprint allows the furniture to fit comfortably into narrower alcoves or restricted spaces within a modern interior.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century Italian painted furniture is recognized for its decorative polychrome finishes, regional botanical motifs, and architectural forms. Craftsmen typically applied gesso bases over softwood frames before painting with tempera or oil-based pigments, often finished with light distressing or gilding.

These cabinets were constructed using regional softwoods such as pine or poplar, covered in a gesso primer, and finished with hand-mixed mineral pigments. Glazed sections utilized hand-blown glass panes, while doors were secured with hand-forged iron hinges and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural paint oxidation, uneven wear around handles and edges, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and irregular period glass. The back panels and drawer linings usually show dark, unpainted timber with age-appropriate shrinkage.

A painted vitrine functions well as a focal piece against neutral walls in living rooms, dining spaces, or hallways. It provides contrast when paired with contemporary minimalist furniture while serving as display storage for ceramics, glassware, or books.

Dust the surface gently using a clean, soft microfibre cloth without commercial aerosol sprays. Maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood movement and preserve flaking paint, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
