Vintage Art Deco Green Shagreen Cigarette Box with Bone/brass Trim, C. 1920-1930

1900 - 1920
Description

Art Deco period cigarette or trinket box, dating from approximately

the 1920s to 1930s.

A rectangular box is fully covered in a vibrant, tactile green shagreen veneer, a material highly popular for luxury items during this era due to its durability and distinctive pebbled texture.

The box features crisp, clean lines typical of the Art Deco style and is elegantly finished along all edges of the hinged lid. The interior is lined with wood, likely cedar or birch, which helps preserve items stored inside and indicates quality craftsmanship. The overall condition appears very good, with the shagreen showing minor natural variations in colour and texture that only add to its vintage appeal.

This vintage Art Deco cigarette or trinket box dates from approximately 1920 to 1930. The rectangular form is fully covered in a vibrant green shagreen veneer displaying a distinctive pebbled texture and natural colour variations, complemented by crisp, clean lines and off-white bone edging along the top rim. The hinged lid meets a wooden interior lining, and the piece measures H: 5.5 x W: 19 x D: 10.5 cm in size. Suitable for use in a modern home as an office desk accessory, jewellery box, or as a sophisticated decorative accent on a coffee table or shelf, this piece brings period glamour and practical storage to any interior setting.

Shagreen refers to the untanned, rough skin of stingrays or sharks, historically dyed and polished to highlight its pebbled texture. It gained immense popularity during the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s as a luxury material for decorative accessories and fine furniture.

Antique shagreen boxes generally feature tanned ray skin glued over a solid timber body. Edges and borders are commonly reinforced or decorated with contrasting materials such as bone, ivory, silver, or brass.

Authentic shagreen exhibits organic variation in the scale sizes, natural surface irregularities, and subtle colour fading over time. Synthetic or faux reproductions display uniform, repeated nodule patterns and a plastic texture.

A shagreen box functions well placed on a study desk, coffee table, or console, serving as a tactile accent piece while offering discreet storage for small everyday items.

To preserve shagreen, keep it away from direct sunlight, excess heat, and humid environments, which can cause the skin to warp or detach. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid water or liquid cleaning agents.
