A very rare antique French carriage clock which features a dial at the front and at the back of the case, with the winding and setting of the hands done underneath the case, presumably would have been used on a partner''s desk! Offered in working order and okay condition with winding key.
I have not seen another clock like this before, and have not found anything online similar. It looks like any other carriage clock from the front or the back. One of the dials is marked Brevete S.G.D.G., which is a French marking used from 1844-1968, indicating the item in question was patented but that the French government offered no guarantee or validity for the invention. The other dial is signed by Mappin & Webb LTD, I guess the retailer. In my opinion, this clock dates from the turn of the nineteenth century.
The clock appears to be fitted with its original lever platform escapement, and it is running strongly, having been fully restored. The hands are set from under the case, whence the c...lock is also wound, and there is a lever for adjusting the timekeeping.
On the top of the case is an old engraving, but too old and fine for me to make out, but all adds to the mystery.
Weighs 1.1kg before wrapping. Stands 5.75'' (14.5cm) high, 3'' (8cm) wide and 3'' (7.5cm) deep.
