The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, a time of rapid modernisation and increased international trade which heavily influenced Japanese decorative arts and furniture design for export.

Traditional shodana cabinets are constructed from hardwoods such as keyaki or chestnut, featuring intricate hand-carved openwork friezes, lacquer finishes, and inlaid panels often utilising bone, ivory, or metal.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with natural wear consistent with age, traditional lacquer applications showing subtle variations, and construction methods characteristic of late 19th-century Japanese joinery without modern fasteners.

This piece works effectively as a focal point against a neutral wall, allowing the intricate carvings and lacquered panels to stand out without visual competition from surrounding furnishings.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting and lacquer cracking, dusting gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth.
