Youngs Antiques has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
In the centre of the crest rail is the date 1656 and the initial R.S , NOTE a chair with similar unsual arms and Initials RSA dated 1685 on the bottom of page 89 - Early british chairs and seats by Tobias Jellinek.
The chair has some later restorations and old wood worm (no longer active) commensurate with age.
