Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A skeleton mirror, also known as a toilet glass or dressing mirror, features an open frame design without an attached base chest or drawers. The swivelling mirror plate is suspended between two vertical uprights, offering a lightweight and versatile design popular during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

These mirrors were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. The frame elements were shaped on a lathe to create turned uprights, while metal brass thumbscrews or tension rings were incorporated to adjust and fix the angle of the glass.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned upright posts, original brass securing fittings, and joinery showing hand-cut dovetails or mortise and tenon joints. The reverse of the mirror frame often displays solid wood backing panels with natural oxidation and historic wear marks consistent with age.

Position the mirror on top of a chest of drawers, a console table, or a bathroom vanity top to create an eclectic focal point. The warm wood tones contrast effectively against contemporary minimalist backdrops or muted paint palettes.

Clean the wooden frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber patina. Avoid using harsh chemical glass cleaners directly on the original mirror glass to prevent silvering deterioration.
