Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French ormolu mantel clock is a spring-driven mechanical timepiece produced in 19th-century France, designed to sit atop a fireplace chimneypiece. These clocks typically display Rococo or Louis XV Revival motifs and feature gilded bronze mounts.

These timepieces are constructed using cast bronze gilded with gold amalgam, known as ormolu, alongside painted or lacquered casing components. Dials often feature individual enamelled cartouches with hand-painted numerals set into a gilded metal plate.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast-bronze mounts with hand-chased details and mercury gilding. The movement backplate is usually stamped with the makers mark or serial numbers, and the dial employs separate enamel cartouches rather than printed single-plate faces.

Position the clock as a focal decorative object on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table. Balance its ornate gilding by pairing it with simple architectural lines, neutral backdrops, or contemporary framed artwork.

Dust the exterior casing regularly using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, taking care not to use chemical polishes that strip gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a professional horologist to ensure correct functioning.
